Shutter materials: real-wood, faux-wood and California

Real-wood shutters are milled from basswood or a comparable hardwood. They are the lightest option for a given louvre size, so panels can be wider before they need a divider rail, and they take stain or paint like millwork. They are the most expensive of the three and the least tolerant of sustained moisture.

Faux-wood shutters use a composite or vinyl-clad core. They are heavier — very wide openings need an extra panel — but they will not warp, swell or discolour in a bathroom, kitchen or laundry room. In a painted white finish, most people cannot tell them from real wood at normal viewing distance.

California shutters are a style, not a separate material: wide louvres, usually 2.5 to 3.5 inches, in a clean painted white. They come in both real wood and faux wood. In Pickering's newer subdivisions — Duffin Heights, Seaton, Amberlea — this is the look most people mean when they call us about shutters.

Drapery styles that actually get installed

Rod-pocket panels slide directly onto the rod. Simple, soft, the least expensive heading, and best where the drapery is decorative and rarely drawn — a dining room or a formal front window.

Pinch-pleat is the traditional tailored heading: fabric gathered into groups of two or three folds at the top. It draws cleanly on rings or a traverse rod and is the default for principal bedrooms and living rooms.

Ripple-fold runs on a carrier track and produces a continuous, even S-wave with no pleat hardware showing. It is the most contemporary look, the smoothest draw across a wide opening, and the one we recommend on patio doors and floor-to-ceiling glass.

Blackout lining can be added to any of the three. A blackout-lined pinch-pleat panel over a blackout roller shade is the quietest, darkest bedroom combination we install, and it is common in Pickering homes backing onto Highway 401 where sound matters as much as light.

Lead times and what the install day looks like

Both products are made to order. Custom manufacturing runs 7–15 business days from the day the order is confirmed.

Shutter installation is normally a single visit: frames set, panels hung, hinges adjusted, magnets checked. Drapery installation includes setting the hardware height, hanging and dressing the panels, and steaming the folds so they hang correctly from day one.
