Window Shutters Buying Guide: Real-Wood, Faux-Wood & California Shutters

The three materials, in one paragraph each

Real-wood shutters are milled from basswood or a comparable hardwood. They are the lightest of the three for a given louvre size, which means wider panels without sagging, and they take a stain or paint finish that looks like millwork rather than a window product. They are also the most expensive and the least tolerant of sustained moisture.

Faux-wood shutters are engineered from a composite or vinyl-clad core. They are heavier, so very wide openings need an extra panel or a divider rail, but they will not warp, swell or discolour in a bathroom, kitchen or laundry room. On a painted white finish, most people cannot tell them from real wood at normal viewing distance.

California shutters are a style rather than a separate material — wide louvres, typically 2.5 to 3.5 inches, in a clean painted white finish, available in either real wood or faux wood. What people are usually asking for when they say 'California shutters' is that wide-louvre, bright-white look that suits GTA suburban homes.

Shutter types compared at a glance

Cost, and what actually drives it

Our shutters start at $450 per window installed, and the range widens with size, louvre width, frame style and material. The three biggest cost drivers, in order: total square footage of the opening, real wood versus faux wood, and whether the opening needs a custom frame for an out-of-square or arched window.

Louvre width barely changes the price but changes the look completely. Wider louvres mean fewer of them, a cleaner view line, and a more contemporary result; narrower louvres suit heritage homes and smaller windows.

Shutters cost more up front than blinds or shades — there is no way around that. What you are buying is a 20-year fixture with no fabric to fade and no mechanism to fail, which is why they are the one product where we tell people to think about resale value honestly rather than monthly savings.

Best-fit rooms

Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and anywhere near a hot tub or pool door: faux wood, always. Sustained humidity is what kills real-wood shutters, and no finish fully prevents it.

Living rooms, dining rooms, principal bedrooms and front-facing windows: real wood, if the budget allows. The lighter panels mean fewer divider rails on tall windows, and stained finishes on real wood are genuinely beautiful in a way faux wood does not replicate.

Whole-home packages across a suburban GTA build: California-style faux wood is the workhorse. Consistent bright white across every window, no moisture worry in the wet rooms, and a single visual language through the house.

Shutters versus blinds and shades

Shutters win on durability, light control precision, insulation at the window, and resale appeal. They are the only window covering that reads as part of the house.

Blinds and shades win on price, on the number of fabric and opacity options, on true blackout for bedrooms, and on motorisation. If a room needs a room-darkening solution for sleep, a blackout roller does it better than any shutter.

Plenty of GTA homes end up with both: shutters on the front-facing and main-floor windows where they are seen from the street, blackout rollers upstairs where sleep matters.

Every shutter we sell is measured by Hayati, the owner, in your home — not by a subcontractor and not from numbers you send us. Shutters are unforgiving of a bad measurement because the frame is fixed; there is no fabric to hide a few millimetres.

Most openings are checked for square in three places, and out-of-square openings get a custom frame rather than a shim job. Manufacturing runs 7–15 business days, and installation is typically a single visit.
