Custom vs. Ready-Made Blinds: What GTA Homeowners Should Know Before Buying

Fit — the difference you'll see every day

Ready-made blinds come in fixed widths: 23", 27", 30", 36", and so on. Your window is almost certainly none of those. The typical fix is either cutting the blind down at home (which voids the warranty and rarely looks square) or living with a 2–4" light gap on one side.

A custom blind is manufactured to the exact millimetre of your window opening. On an inside mount the fabric clears the frame by 3/8" per side — enough to raise and lower cleanly, tight enough that light leakage is minimal.

Fabric and mechanism quality

The chain and clutch on a $60 ready-made roller is a stamped plastic assembly rated for roughly 5,000 cycles. In a living room used twice a day, that's about 7 years — and it starts sticking well before then.

A custom-order clutch from a Canadian mill is rated for 25,000+ cycles, warrantied 5 years, and is the same hardware used in commercial installs. Fabric quality is a similar gap: proper acrylic-coated blackouts vs. thin vinyl-backed room-darkening.

Installed cost — what the numbers actually work out to

Ready-made: $40–$120 per window at retail, plus your time to measure and install. Realistic total on a standard GTA window is $60–$160 including a return trip for a size that didn't fit.

The custom price is 2–3x higher upfront. Over a 10-year lifespan the ready-made blind has usually been replaced 1–2 times, so the total spend converges quickly. Add the labour of two DIY installs and custom is usually cheaper by year 6.

Warranty and recourse

Ready-made blinds carry a 1-year manufacturer warranty on the mechanism only, and the fabric is explicitly "as sold". You return the box to the store.

Custom blinds we install carry the full manufacturer warranty (5 years mechanism, 5 years fabric on most lines) plus our 5-year workmanship warranty on the install itself. If a bracket loosens or a clutch fails, one WhatsApp message and we come back out.

When ready-made actually makes sense

Short-term rentals where the tenant will change in 12 months.

A cottage or basement window that gets very little use.

A single window in a room that will be renovated in the next 2 years anyway.

For every primary living space, custom is a better long-term decision — and cheaper than most GTA homeowners assume once they see an installed quote.
