Budget Blinds is the largest window-covering franchise in North America, and they do a lot of things well: broad product catalogues, national brand recognition, and a franchise owner in almost every GTA municipality.
We're the other model — one owner-operator, Pickering-based, working across the Greater Toronto Area. Neither model is wrong. They suit different buyers, and this page lays out the differences plainly so you can tell which one you are.
Side by side
Pricing model — Franchise: national catalogue pricing with franchise fees, marketing levies and often a commissioned sales consultant built into the quote, commonly presented as a percentage off a list price. Shine & Shadow: published installed ranges ($170–$900 per window depending on product), no list-price theatre, no commission layer. In practice we come in roughly 15–30% below national-chain quotes for a comparable custom spec.
Who measures and installs — Franchise: usually a design consultant measures, and a subcontracted installer you haven't met returns to fit. Shine & Shadow: Hayati measures, orders, and installs every job himself.
Warranty — Franchise: manufacturer warranty plus a franchise-backed limited warranty, honoured through the local franchisee. Shine & Shadow: full manufacturer coverage plus our own 5-year workmanship warranty, serviced by the person who did the install.
Lead time — Franchise: typically 2–4 weeks depending on catalogue line and supplier. Shine & Shadow: 7–15 business days of manufacturing, with consultation usually within 2–4 days of your first message and installation in a single visit.
Product range — Franchise: very wide, including several exclusive brand lines. Shine & Shadow: focused on zebra blinds, roller shades, vertical blinds, motorized shades, custom drapery and shutters — everything we install regularly, nothing we don't.
Where a national franchise is the better choice
If you want a specific brand-exclusive product line, a large showroom-style catalogue, or financing arranged through the retailer, a franchise is a reasonable fit.
If you're outfitting a commercial property with dozens of openings and need a project manager rather than an installer, the franchise structure handles that scale more comfortably than a single operator does.
Where we're the better choice
You want to know the installed price before anyone comes to your house, and you want it in writing at the consultation rather than after a follow-up call.
You want one person accountable end to end. When something needs adjusting two years later, you message the same number and the same person shows up.
You're buying for one home, in the GTA, and you'd rather the money go into fabric and mechanism quality than into franchise overhead.
How to compare two quotes fairly
Ignore percentages entirely and compare the installed total per window. Then confirm four things in writing on both quotes: fabric name and openness, mechanism brand, mount type, and warranty terms.
If both quotes list the same real spec and one is materially cheaper, that's a genuine saving. If the specs differ, you're comparing two different products, not two prices.

Frequently asked questions
- Are you actually cheaper than Budget Blinds?
- For a comparable custom-made, professionally installed spec, our quotes typically come in 15–30% lower, because there's no franchise fee, call centre or commissioned sales rep in the price. On a brand-exclusive product line a direct comparison isn't always possible.
- Is a franchise warranty better than yours?
- Both include full manufacturer coverage. The difference is service: ours is a 5-year workmanship warranty honoured by the person who installed your blinds, not routed through a dispatcher.
- Do you sell the same brands?
- We use established Canadian manufacturers for fabric and mechanisms, but we don't carry franchise-exclusive brand lines. If you want a specific exclusive product, a franchise is the right place to buy it.
- How do I compare two quotes?
- Compare installed price per window, then confirm fabric name, mechanism brand, mount type and warranty terms in writing on both. Never compare advertised discount percentages.
