Zebra Blinds Inc is a factory-direct manufacturer selling window coverings across the Greater Toronto Area. We are an owner-operated installer based in Pickering, serving Durham & York Region and East Toronto. Both are legitimate ways to buy custom blinds, and they suit different buyers.
This comparison is deliberately factual. We are not going to tell you a manufacturer is a bad choice — for some jobs it is the right one. What follows is how the two models actually differ so you can decide which fits the way you want to buy.
Pricing model
A factory-direct manufacturer prices the product and often lists installation separately, or bundles it into a promotional offer. The headline number you see is usually the product, and the total depends on what is added at the quote stage.
We publish installed ranges and quote one number per window that includes fabric, hardware, custom manufacture to the millimetre and professional installation. Zebra blinds run $180–$320 installed, roller shades $170–$320, vertical blinds $220–$400, motorised $450–$900, drapery from $320 and shutters from $450. There is no measure fee and no travel fee.
We also do not run percentage-off promotions. We explain why in our transparent-pricing guide: an '80% off' headline requires an inflated 'before' price to discount from. Compare installed totals per window, not discount percentages.
Who measures and who installs
With a manufacturer, measurement and installation are frequently handled by a dispatched crew or a subcontracted installer. That crew is often good, but they are not the person who quoted you and usually not the person you would speak to about a problem later.
With us, Hayati measures, quotes and installs every job personally. The person you message on WhatsApp is the person standing at your window, and the same person handles any service call afterwards. That is the core of the owner-operated model and it is the main practical difference between the two.
Service area and scheduling
A manufacturer with a showroom typically covers a broad radius from one or more locations, with scheduling routed through a central booking desk.
We are based in Pickering and work across the Greater Toronto Area — Durham Region, York Region and East Toronto. Because there is no booking desk, scheduling happens directly over WhatsApp, usually with a ballpark price back within an hour and an in-home consultation within 2–4 days.
Warranty and after-sales service
Manufacturers generally provide a manufacturer warranty on fabric and mechanisms, which is real coverage and worth having. Where the models differ is workmanship and who answers the call.
Every job we install carries a 5-year workmanship warranty in addition to the manufacturer's fabric and mechanism coverage, and it is honoured by the person who did the installation rather than routed through a dispatcher.
Lead time
Both models manufacture to order, so nothing is off-the-shelf. Factory-direct sellers can sometimes be quicker when a product is made in their own facility and the schedule is open.
Our custom manufacturing runs 7–15 business days, with installation typically completed in a single 1–2 hour visit. We quote that range honestly rather than promising a best case.
Which one should you choose?
Choose a factory-direct manufacturer if you want to see a wide product wall in a showroom, if you are comparing a large number of proprietary fabric lines, or if a specific manufacturer-exclusive product is what you are after.
Choose us if you want one person accountable end to end, an installed price per window written down before anything is ordered, and a direct line to the installer for the life of the product.
Either way, ask both quotes for the same four things in writing: installed total per window, fabric name and openness, mechanism brand, and warranty terms. That is the only comparison that tells you anything.

Frequently asked questions
- Is factory-direct always cheaper?
- Not necessarily. A factory-direct product price can look lower while installation, measurement or hardware is quoted separately. Compare the installed total per window on both quotes with the same fabric spec — that is the only like-for-like number.
- Who actually installs my blinds with Shine & Shadow?
- Hayati, the owner. He measures, quotes and installs every job personally, and handles any service call afterwards. There is no dispatched crew and no subcontracted installer.
- Do you have a showroom?
- No. We bring fabric and colour samples to your home during the free in-home consultation, which is how you see the fabric in your own light rather than under showroom lighting. It is also one reason our installed pricing sits where it does.
- Do you match a competitor's quote?
- We do not price-match a headline number, because the specs are rarely identical. Send us the other quote and we will tell you plainly whether the fabric, mechanism and mount are comparable to what we would install.
- How long does each option take?
- Both are made to order. Our custom manufacturing runs 7–15 business days, followed by installation in a single 1–2 hour visit in most homes.
