Zebra Blinds vs. Roller Shades: Which Is Right for Your GTA Home

Two of our most-requested window coverings, side by side — how they differ on light control, privacy, price, and where each one actually belongs in a Toronto-area home.

Zebra Blinds vs. Roller Shades: Which Is Right for Your GTA Home

Nine out of ten quotes we send in the GTA come down to the same two products: zebra blinds or roller shades. They look similar in a listing photo, they cost about the same, and they're both custom-made for your window. But they behave very differently once they're on the wall, and choosing the wrong one is the number-one reason people call us to redo a room a year later.

Here's how we help clients across Pickering, Markham, and Richmond Hill decide between the two — no upselling, no fabric-of-the-month.

The short version

A roller shade is one layer of fabric on a tube. It's either up or down. Down means either "filtered light" or "blackout" depending on the fabric you choose — you don't get to change your mind by the hour.

A zebra blind (sometimes called a dual shade or day-night blind) is one piece of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. Rolling it slightly aligns either the sheer or the solid bands in front of your window, so the same blind gives you filtered daylight in the morning and full privacy at night without raising the shade.

If you want one product that adapts through the day, zebra wins. If you want the simplest, cleanest, and most durable option — especially for blackout — a roller shade wins.

Light control and privacy

In a west-facing GTA living room, sun angle changes by the hour. A zebra blind lets you go from wide-open sheer at 10 a.m. to fully closed privacy at 8 p.m. with a single continuous chain pull. You don't have to raise anything, and the view stays partially available even when the blind is "closed."

A roller shade in the same room gives you a binary choice: up (view + no privacy) or down (privacy + no view). Solar-screen rollers soften this a bit — you can see out during the day even when they're down, but people can still see in at night once your lights are on.

Blackout and bedrooms

For bedrooms, a roller shade is almost always the right answer. A blackout roller with side channels blocks essentially all incoming light — the difference between sleeping until 5 a.m. in June and sleeping until 7.

Zebra blinds can be ordered with a blackout backing, but even the best ones leak light through the band seams and around the edges. If you're a light sleeper or you work nights, don't fight this — put a blackout roller in the bedroom and save the zebra for the front of the house.

Price, installed, in the GTA

Installed pricing for both products lands in the same range: roughly $170–$320 per standard window. Zebra blinds usually come in $10–$30 higher than a comparable roller because there's more fabric involved, and blackout zebra pushes another $40–$80 on top.

Motorization adds about $180–$280 per window on either product. Beyond four or five windows in one room, group control (one remote runs the whole room) usually pays for itself in convenience within a month.

Which room gets which

Here's the rule-of-thumb we use on almost every quote:

RoomRecommended product
Living room, dining room, front-facing roomsZebra blinds. You want the flexibility.
BedroomsBlackout roller shades. You want the sleep.
Kitchen and bathroomRoller shades in a moisture-friendly fabric. Simple, easy to wipe, no bands to catch grease.
Home officeMotorized zebra or motorized solar-screen rollers, depending on how much glare you get on your monitor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix zebra and roller shades in the same house?
Absolutely — and we recommend it. Zebra up front, roller in the bedrooms is the most common layout in a GTA home.
Do zebra blinds work on patio doors?
Yes, but for very wide patio doors (over 96") we usually recommend vertical blinds or a wide-panel motorized zebra instead — a single narrow zebra on a wide door struggles with fabric sag.
Which lasts longer?
Both are warrantied 5 years on the mechanism. Realistically, roller shades outlast zebra blinds by 2–3 years because there's less moving fabric to wear.
