Ajax and Whitby are two of the busiest routes we run. Between Nottingham, Lakeside, Brooklin and Williamsburg, we quote zebra blinds almost every week — and the questions are always the same: what does it really cost installed, which fabric belongs in which room, and how long until the windows are done.
This is the same answer we'd give you standing in your living room, written down. Positioning note: we're based in Pickering and work across the whole Greater Toronto Area, so nothing here is Ajax- or Whitby-only pricing — it's just the local version of our standard installed rates.
What zebra blinds cost in Ajax and Whitby
Installed zebra blinds start at $180 per standard window (up to 48" wide) — the same starting price shown on our zebra blinds product page, with no travel fee anywhere in Durham Region.
Large windows in the 48–72" range run $260–$400. Extra-wide spans and patio-door widths land between $400 and $650. Blackout fabric bands add $40–$90 per window, and motorization adds $180–$280.
A typical Ajax two-storey with 12–14 windows lands around $2,600–$3,600 installed. A Brooklin new build with a tall great-room window usually adds $400–$700 for that one opening alone.
Choosing the fabric
Light-filtering bands are the default and the right call for most front-facing rooms — you keep the daylight and lose the fishbowl feeling once the solid bands line up at night.
Room-darkening bands are the middle option: noticeably dimmer, still not true blackout. Good for a media room or a west-facing dining room that bakes at 6 p.m.
Blackout-backed zebra is the one we talk people out of most often. If you need a genuinely dark bedroom, a blackout roller shade does it better for less. Zebra is a daytime-flexibility product.
Style choices that actually matter
Cassette or open roll: a fabric-wrapped cassette hides the tube and reads as finished trim. Open roll is $15–$25 cheaper per window and fine above a kitchen sink where nobody looks up.
Inside vs outside mount: Ajax builder frames (Mattamy, Tribute, Fieldgate) almost always take a clean inside mount. Older Downtown Whitby frames are rarely square, so outside mount usually looks better and seals light better.
Chain or cordless: cordless is standard on anything in a child's room, and it's the option we recommend by default now.
