Warranty language is one of the least standardised things in the window-covering business across the Greater Toronto Area. Two companies can both advertise a long warranty and mean completely different things by it, and neither is necessarily being dishonest — they are describing different parts of the job.
This guide separates the two kinds of coverage you are actually buying, explains what each one realistically protects you from, and gives you the questions to ask so you can compare quotes on the same terms.
Two different warranties, often quoted as one
A workmanship warranty covers the installation: brackets that hold, a shade that hangs level and square, a headrail that stays fastened to the casing, and any damage caused by how the product was mounted. It is issued by the company that physically did the work.
A manufacturer's product warranty covers the product itself: the roller mechanism, the clutch or motor, the fabric against defects such as delamination or premature fading. It is issued by the factory, and the installer administers the claim on your behalf.
Long headline numbers — "lifetime", "25-year" — almost always refer to the manufacturer's product warranty, not to the install. That does not make the claim untrue. It means the number describes the factory's confidence in the mechanism, and tells you nothing about who fixes a shade that was mounted badly.
What Shine & Shadow covers
We provide a 5-year workmanship warranty on every installation. If a bracket loosens, a shade drifts out of level, or something we mounted causes damage, we come back and fix it at no charge.
The product carries the manufacturer's own warranty on mechanisms, motors and fabric, and we handle the claim process — you deal with us, not with a factory service line.
Because the same person quotes, measures and installs your order, there is no gap where an install problem gets reclassified as a product problem or vice versa. That single point of responsibility is usually worth more in practice than a longer headline number.
How to read a warranty claim critically
Ask which of the two warranties the advertised number refers to, and get it in writing on the quote rather than from a brochure.
Ask what a claim actually costs you. Many product warranties cover the part but not the labour to remove, ship and reinstall the shade — a covered motor can still come with a service call fee.
Ask whether the coverage is transferable and whether it survives the company. A long warranty from a business with no local service presence is only as good as the availability of someone to honour it.
Ask what voids it. Cleaning methods, moisture exposure and DIY adjustments are the usual exclusions, and they are worth knowing before rather than after.
Financing, split payments and published pricing
Split-payment and instalment offers exist mainly because the final price is unknown until a consultant is sitting in your living room. When the number lands higher than expected, financing is the tool used to close the gap.
Our installed pricing is published up front, per window and per product, so you can size the project before anyone visits. Most homes we work in do a room at a time rather than the whole house at once, which spreads the cost without adding an instalment plan on top of it.
We take a deposit at order and the balance on completion. If you want the exact figures for your own rooms, the pricing guide has the per-window ranges, and our reviews and FAQ cover how the process runs from quote to install.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a workmanship warranty and a product warranty?
- A workmanship warranty covers the installation — mounting, levelling and any damage from how the product was fitted. A product warranty is issued by the manufacturer and covers mechanisms, motors and fabric defects. They are separate coverages, often quoted together.
- Does a "lifetime warranty" mean everything is covered forever?
- No. Long headline warranties almost always refer to the manufacturer's product coverage on the mechanism, usually with exclusions for labour, normal wear, moisture damage and improper cleaning. Ask which parts are included and whether service calls are charged.
- What warranty does Shine & Shadow provide?
- A 5-year workmanship warranty on the installation, plus the manufacturer's warranty on the product. We administer manufacturer claims for you.
- Do you offer financing or split payments?
- We do not run instalment plans. Our installed pricing is published up front, and many customers phase the work room by room instead. A deposit is taken at order with the balance due on completion.
- Is the warranty transferable if I sell my home?
- The manufacturer's product warranty terms vary by supplier and we confirm them on your quote. Contact us with the original order details and we will tell you exactly what applies.
