Watch Out for '80% Off' Blinds Sales in the GTA

The permanent sale banner is a markup trick, not a discount. Here is how to read past it and compare real installed pricing on custom blinds.

It is 2026 and the banner still hasn't come down. Some GTA retailers have been advertising "70% off" and "80% off" custom blinds continuously for years — the same claim, the same countdown, every season. If a sale never ends, it isn't a sale. It's a pricing strategy.

We wrote about how we price instead in /guides/transparent-pricing-no-fake-discounts. This is the shopper's version: how to spot an inflated discount and how to compare quotes so you're looking at real numbers.

How the '80% off' math works

A retailer lists a standard roller shade at a "regular price" of $1,100 per window and sells it at 80% off for $220. Nobody has ever paid $1,100. The $220 is simply the price — and it's roughly what the same shade costs anywhere.

The inflated "before" number does two jobs. It manufactures urgency ("the sale ends Sunday"), and it gives a sales rep room to appear to fight for you by "escalating" for another 5%.

Ontario's Consumer Protection Act prohibits misleading regular-price claims, but enforcement is rare, and as of 2026 the pattern is still normal across a lot of GTA window-covering advertising.

Five signs the discount isn't real

The sale never ends. Check the same site next month. If the banner is identical, the "regular price" is fiction.

The discount is enormous. Genuine clearance on a discontinued fabric is 10–25%. Nobody sells a custom-manufactured product at a real 80% off and stays in business.

The price is only quoted after a home visit. If the number depends on how the conversation goes, it's negotiation, not pricing.

Measurement and installation are separate line items added at the end. A $199 "sale" blind with a $95 install fee and a $45 measure fee is a $339 blind.

The rep offers a further discount if you sign today. That extra room existed the whole time.

How to compare quotes on real numbers

Ask for one number: the installed price per window, in a named fabric, with the mount type specified. Ignore every percentage.

Ask which mill makes the fabric and the mechanism. Two products both described as a "custom roller" can differ by 3x in real quality.

Ask what's included — measurement, installation, removal and disposal of old blinds, and the workmanship warranty.

Compare against published ranges rather than against another sale banner. Ours are on /blinds-cost-ontario, per product and per room, so you can see what a fair GTA number looks like before anyone visits your home.

What we do instead

One installed number per window that includes fabric, hardware, custom manufacture to the millimetre, professional installation, and the 5-year workmanship warranty.

That number doesn't move for Black Friday, Boxing Day, or a signature today. There is no inflated "before" price because there is nothing to discount from.

No showroom rent, no commissioned sales rep, no franchise fee. That's the actual reason our installed pricing lands 15–30% below the "discounted" number from a national competitor.

If you want to know how that plays out for real homeowners rather than in a banner, our /reviews page collects client feedback from across the GTA.

A two-minute sanity check before you sign

Write down the installed total, the window count, the fabric name, and the warranty terms. If a quote can't produce all four in writing, it isn't a quote.

Divide the total by the number of windows. If your per-window number sits far outside the published GTA ranges in either direction, ask why — cheap usually means a stock size trimmed to fit, and expensive usually means overhead you're funding.

Then send the same four details to us on WhatsApp. We'll tell you honestly whether the quote you're holding is fair, even when the answer is that you should take it.

Frequently asked questions

Is an '80% off' blinds sale legal in Ontario?
Misleading regular-price claims are prohibited under Ontario's Consumer Protection Act, but enforcement is rare, so the practice persists. The practical defence is to ignore percentages and compare installed prices per window.
Do you ever run discounts?
Occasionally 5–10% on a specific fabric a mill is discontinuing. We never advertise an inflated regular price to discount from.
Will you price-match a competitor's 'sale' price?
We'll match on comparable fabric and mechanism spec. In most cases our standard installed price is already below a competitor's discounted price for the same real spec.
What should a fair installed price look like in the GTA?
Roughly $170–$320 per standard window for zebra or roller shades, $220–$400 for vertical blinds, and $450–$900 for motorized. Full ranges are on our pricing page.
