How Much Do Custom Blinds Cost in Durham Region and the GTA?
A useful estimate includes the window, the fabric, the hardware and the installation—not just a headline discount.
By Fatih, Shine Shadow · Published · Updated

Custom blinds do not have one dependable per-window price: the size, fabric, mechanism and installation requirements change the total. Use published ranges only as a starting point, then compare written installed quotes for the same specification. An estimate is not a promise that every window will fit within the lowest advertised figure.
Shine & Shadow is based in Ajax and serves homes across the Greater Toronto Area, including Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa. The estimates below are adapted from the site's existing pricing content and explicitly await owner confirmation for this article; they are not independently verified market averages or binding quotes.
Per-window estimates: a planning aid, not a confirmed quote
These CAD figures are provisional examples for budgeting, taken from existing site ranges. They require owner confirmation before being relied on as current pricing. Window sizes, fabric options, taxes and inclusions must be checked in a written quote. Do not multiply a lowest starting price by every opening and treat the result as a whole-home offer.
The purpose of a range is to show how different specifications can affect a budget, not to conceal the final total. An unusually wide opening, a particular blackout system or a hardwired motor may fall outside a general range. Ask what the standard-window assumption actually means before comparing estimates from different providers.
| Product | Provisional CAD estimate per window | Confirmation needed |
|---|---|---|
| Zebra blinds | $180–$320 — estimate only | Owner confirmation required |
| Roller shades | $170–$300 — estimate only | Owner confirmation required |
| Vertical blinds | $220–$400 — estimate only | Owner confirmation required |
| Motorized blinds | $450–$900 — estimate only | Owner confirmation required |
Window dimensions change more than the amount of fabric
Width affects tube stiffness, brackets and the maximum span a product can support. Height affects fabric length and operating weight. A wide patio opening is therefore not simply two small shades joined together. Depending on the system, separate units may operate better and allow access through the door without raising the whole covering.
In newer Whitby or Oshawa homes, tall stair and great-room windows need an access plan as well as measurements. In older Pickering frames, an outside mount may be preferable to squeezing a cassette into shallow trim. Neither condition justifies a mysterious surcharge: ask the quote to describe the extra hardware or work involved.
Fabric and blackout details need to be itemised
Light-filtering, solar-screen and opaque fabrics perform differently. A solar screen is selected for its openness and glare characteristics, while a blackout fabric is chosen to block transmitted light. Colour and weave can also change the view and perceived brightness. Compare a fabric code, not just the words premium or designer.
Side channels, fascia and cassette finishes may be separate choices. A blackout fabric quote without edge treatment is not equivalent to a quote that includes a complete light-gap solution. During a consultation, ask which parts are essential for your room's goal and which are mainly decorative so you can decide where to spend.
What an installed quote should actually include
Look for measurement, custom manufacture, brackets, operating hardware and fitting labour. Confirm whether old-covering removal, disposal and repair of existing fixing holes are included or outside the scope. If a quote says installation included, it should still explain what installation means for the windows being measured.
Warranty is another separate line of enquiry. Workmanship coverage concerns the installation; manufacturer coverage concerns the product and may vary for fabric, hardware and motors. Ask who handles a fault, what exclusions apply and whether a service visit has a cost. The cheapest initial figure is not necessarily the best documented offer.
Motorization changes the controls and the work involved
A rechargeable motor can reduce the need for new electrical work, but charging access still matters. A hardwired solution may need a licensed electrician and planned cabling. A smart hub, remote or voice-assistant integration is not automatically included with every motor. The written specification should identify all those items.
For an Ajax home with several shades, motorizing only the difficult-to-reach openings may be a sensible option. Ask for separate manual and motorized alternatives per room. This is more useful than comparing a whole-house automated package with a basic manual quote and assuming the price difference is a retailer's markup.
Compare final totals rather than percentage-off promotions
A percentage discount is calculated from a reference price. Unless you know what that reference includes and whether it is a meaningful selling price, the percentage does not establish value. Compare the final installed total, taxes, product specification and responsibility for measurements. Keep the written offers so you can inspect the differences.
Avoid assuming every promotion is misleading; a genuine clearance or limited fabric offer may suit your needs. The practical question is whether the final product and service match your requirements. Ask what changes when you choose another fabric, a larger width or a motor, and whether the discount applies to those options too.
A five-step checklist before approving a custom order
First, label each window by room and agree the mounting method. Second, confirm the fabric code, opacity, colour and operation. Third, obtain the installed total with taxes and exclusions clearly stated. Fourth, read the warranty, deposit and cancellation terms before approving custom manufacture. Fifth, confirm the expected lead time and installation access.
Custom manufacture typically takes 7–15 business days, but that is not a guaranteed end-to-end appointment date. Consultation availability, quote approval and installation scheduling also matter. If you have a move-in deadline in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby or Oshawa, explain it early and ask what can realistically be confirmed for your order.

Frequently asked questions
- Are the estimates on this article confirmed prices?
- No. They are provisional planning estimates drawn from existing site content and marked for owner confirmation. Your measured, written quote determines the current price.
- Does a product-only quote include installation?
- Not necessarily. Check measurement, hardware, fitting labour, taxes and responsibility for an incorrect size before comparing it with an installed quote.
- Can I get a price without measuring every window?
- A photo and rough dimensions can support an initial estimate. Exact dimensions and installation requirements are needed before approving a custom order.
- Should I budget for a smart hub separately?
- Ask the provider. The motor, remote, hub, setup and electrical work are distinct items and may not all be included.
- How do I request a quote across the GTA?
- Send your city, window photos and rooms on WhatsApp, or arrange a free in-home consultation with samples and measuring.
